As 2011 heads to a close and the Holiday season gives us all a sense of reflection, I would like to take this opportunity to recognize all of our accomplishments in the past year, as well as those that will be happening throughout 2012!
A few highlights:
The UNIDAD Senior Center at the North Beach Oceanfront Center is coming very close to completion, and the recent photos here show the progress made this year. We anticipate the building will be complete in January 2012, with our Grand Opening Celebrations taking place in March 2012. Our existing senior programs will move to the building when completed and we will have space for new and expanded programs. See this link to learn more about our current senior programs which include CPR training, Customer and You training, Thanksgiving Turkey giveaway, paid work training placements of seniors in community organizations and subsequent job placement, Holiday parties, legal aid clinics, ESOL classes and refugee/immigration services, just to name a few!
Our Career Center had tens of thousands of client visits in the past 12 months, assisting people with finding employment, their unemployment claims and many other workforce-related matters.
The New Generation Leadership and Workforce Institute had another highly successful program year, providing hundreds of youth with year round programming and 75 with two levels of Summer Institute experiences.
A new program at UNIDAD is the “Kids Hip to be Fit” after school program which operates in two Miami-Dade County schools. The program serves 75 children, providing innovative literacy/reading, fitness, nutrition, and social skills programming, along with homework help and healthy snacks. To share the wonder of the Holiday season with those less fortunate, UNIDAD has organized the City’s largest annual gift delivery program for the past fourteen years. Last year, over 1,000 needy children and seniors received a holiday gift as part of our efforts. This year the annual gift delivery will take place on December 17, from 9am to 1pm at the Coral Rock House. Sponsored by Standard Parking and Mayor Matti Herrera-Bower, with the support from all the City of Miami Beach Commissioners and individual donors, this tradition has made a shining difference in the lives of so many over the years. And you can help to keep this tradition growing. We are calling on our Miami Beach neighbors who care about the less fortunate in our community to open their hearts and make a donation to our 2011 Annual Holiday Gift Program. Your spirit of sharing can bring joy and smiles to so many seniors and children. Call 305-867-0051 or email firstname.lastname@example.org if you wish to make a cash or gift donation.
On behalf of the Board of Directors and staff of UNIDAD, I thank all of our supporters and clients and extend our best wishes for the New Year to all!
